No Tobacco Day on 30th May 2009

BSES MG Hospital, managed by Brahma Kumaris GHRC, organized an "Anti Tobacco Campaign" on the occasion of "World No Tobacco Day". The inaugural function for this campaign was held on Saturday, 30th May 2009, 6:30 p.m. at the Hospital auditorium.

This campaign was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. K. P. Raghuvanshi (Addl. DG Railways & Jt. CP ATS), Mr. S. Sreesanth - Famous Cricketer was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Ashok Mehta - Eminent Cancer Surgeon and Medical Director of BSES MG Hospital, B. K. Asha Behn, Director, Om Shanti Retreat Centre near Delhi, welcomed the guests.

Dr. Ashok Mehta gave valuable inputs on the serious ill effects of tobacco. 1 billion people across the globe are addicted. In India, 5 million children under the age of 15 years, 142 million men and 72 million women are in the grip of Tobacco. 1 million deaths occur every year in India alone. The reasons for such addiction are stress, peer group pressure and media. Prevention is more important than cure which can be achieved through mass media campaigns, school based prevention programmes and counseling. He also briefed everyone about "My India, Healthy India" project by Brahma Kumaris.

Mr. S. Sreesanth has been practicing visualization for a long time. It was today that he experienced the Brahma Kumaris Rajyoga Meditation. He had an amazing relaxing experience in spite of being extremely tired after the jet lag and IPL - 2. He expressed his desire to spend more time to learn Rajyoga Meditation. "You can only see people around happy when you are happy yourself." He inspired the youth to be free from tobacco and other addictions. He had never smoked in his life. To be a successful sports person you need to be number one and free from any addiction. Smoking kills your fitness, ages you and kills your beauty.

Mr. K. P. Raghuvanshi said that tobacco is not considered dangerous enough by people and hence children start smoking and hiding away from their parents. An ex-smoker himself, he quit smoking after great difficulty, only to maintain happiness of his daughter and harmony with family and friends. Now, he can't stand anyone smoking and wonders how his family withstood him during his smoking days. Passive smoking causes major collateral damage to people around. A whooping amount of Rs. 27,000 crores is spent on curing diseases from tobacco and the loss is much more than the revenue earned by the government from tobacco. It destroys the total health of our country. One can set an example for others by quitting smoking. Which means if I quit others will follow. He applauded the efforts of the Brahma Kumaris in purification of soul & body with a holistic approach. This in turn improves the health and happiness of society and nation. Dr. Sachin Parab quoted that "We want all the right things, but we are looking at wrong places." People basically want Peace, Love & Happiness in life, little knowing where to find. With regular meditation and a little medical support people can free themselves from the clutches of such evils.

B. K. Asha Behn, Director, Om Shanti Retreat Centre near Delhi, in her motivational message said "A cigarette is 2.5 inches, but can make a person of 6 ft. a slave for life. Freedom is the nature of soul and with Rajyoga meditation we can experience our inner powers to overcome addiction." B. K. Ansula Behn took people through a meditation experience which enabled them to experience an inner journey of silence and empower themselves with the power of transformation.
